At the Hammer Museum in LA, I was not allowed to use my own ballpoint to take a note for “security reasons”. Here, all the knifes are hanging at the door so people can “help themselves” and nobody is fucking with any security reasons.

I consider the old sculpture in front of the National Lotery building was much more ad-hoc than the new one:

I don’t know if the message behind this is that people don’t surrender to the vice of gambling, or that they gamble but don’t come to claim for their prizes.

The same Captain America is taken a picture with a boy. I guess that the mother doesn’t want to deny his son the moment of happiness of being photographed with his favorite hero. But also in an act of common sense she decides to cover his face and, this way, avoid him the future humiliation of seeing himself in this picture with Captain Belly.

A friend comes angry from the movies. She’s just seen “Black Swan”.

“In Mexico there are more than 30,000 dead because of this drug war, hundreds a week, and nobody seems very impressed. But Natalie Portman pulls a tiny piece of skin from the side of her nail and everybody in the audience screams as if someone were really being slaughtered.

“No”, dice. Corto. Y otra vez vuelve a marcar.

We were having a ride on Sunday and suddenly all decided to go to the beach and skip work the next day. Happily.

Already Monday, on the beach, I am listening to my friend’s iPhone (who also skipped work) and there’s an incoming call. My music ceases to play. I ask him if he wants to answer. He looks at the caller-ID and sees it’s his boss. “No”, he says. I reject the call and keep on listening to music. This person insists. It disturbs me because he doesn’t let me listen to the music. I hang up. And he dials again. Like this, two or three times. Then I get mad and claim: “doesn’t this man have anything better to do today besides being a nuisance? It’s amazing how people can fart around!”

My friend looks at me and reminds me: “today is Monday 4 PM, he’s at work and I’m sure he needs something… I don’t think his the one who is farting around”.

I am requesting a toy from China. When I found the provider on Internet, and decided he was the most convenient, there were images of this toy with writings in Chinese on it. But know it looks like they only have it in English. My sister is helping me place the order. I ask her to ask them again if they have a version in Chinese. They repeat they don’t. So I ask her to send them an image of the toy they have on their internet page with the text in Chinese, I ask her to comfront them, to complain, because they are deceiving people!

The next day my sister calls me with the new answer: “they say the toy in the picture is in Japanese”.

My sister concludes:

A friend is telling about a group of French people who belong to a very important museum in Paris. He is coordinating a trip to Cuba for them, during the Havana Biennale. He complains that they’re very arrogant, almost unbearable, he says.

“But how arrogant are they?”, I ask.

“So arrogant that when they asked me what hotel they’ll stay in, I explained it was the best hotel in Cuba. And one of them answered: Do you think the best will be enough for us?”

Hammer Museum, Los Angeles CA, agosto 2011

I am at the museum, looking at a retrospective exhibition of the artist Paul Thek and I find many of his works very interesting. I normally take some notes when this happens (I have learnt that taking out my photo camera is a hassle, because in most of the places not even flash-less photography is aloud). I am taking a brief note when the guard comes to me and hands me a pencil. He tells me to please use this pencil he’s giving me to take my notes.

“Why?”, I ask.

“Because the pen could break and ink come out and stain the works of art”.

I show him my pen which is not a pen but a ballpoint pen, retractable.

“Yes, excuse me, but you’ll have to use this pencil”, he tells me with a smile.

With a much bigger and fake smile than his I tell him: “thank you for your pencil, but this is the most ridiculous thing”.

I take his pencil. I don’t remember what I wanted to jot down. In deed, I don’t feel like taking any notes. In fact, I want to leave: I don’t want to continue watching the show. I don’t want to step in this museum again, or any other museum, ever again.

“¡No!”

We started talking and laughing about the vicissitudes of having a “bottom strip wax” done. Afterwards, we continued talking about a new haircut-look called ‘ends worn out’. We laughed a lot again.

My friend said: “when I return to B.A. I am going to have it done and will send you the pictures”.

I was startled: “the ‘bottom strip wax’?”

“No!” – she said – “are you nuts? I am speaking about the ‘ends worn out’.

“Ah!” – I sighed.

The other day she sent this pic to me.

I think I would have been more flattering for her to have the “bottom strip wax” done instead.

Chicago IL, agosto 2011

So one can cross the Street, the traffic light has to say “WALK”.

When it is about to change, and so that pedestrians speed up, the “DON’T WALK” light starts flashing.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think the logical behavior would be that “WALK” flashed: that gives the idea of “walk, but walk faster”.

Someone told me: “what happens is that they did it like this so that pedestrians who are about to cross, if they see that “DON’T WALK” is flashing, they don’t try to cross because there’s not enough time. And the ones that are already crossing, if they see “DON’T WALK” flash, then they speed up”.

I refused: “if I am about to cross the street and WALK starts flashing, I know it is for people already crossing to speed up, and it warns me that I do not have enough time to cross”.

To sum up, in both cases it is the same: it’s all about understanding the code.

My questioning is more survival than semantics: if a person is crossing and she’s told DON’T WALK by flashing, she’s being led to suicide. On the other hand, if someone is about to cross and WALK starts flashing, she’s being told “hurry up!”. And each one has the ability to decide if their body is athletic enough to do it on time or not.

Luckily “Cloud Gate” (aka “the bean”), the sculpture by Anish Kapoor Kapoor, was constructed in several months, so that citizens had the chance to see how this object had arrived to the park. Can you imagine going to bed and the next morning wake up and find this in front of your home or office?

I don’t want to know how much they paid the window designer of ALDO store to do this on Magnificent Mile, in Chicago, but I am sure it was much more than the severance pay they gave the maintenance guy who was kicked-off for forgetting the ladder.
